First edition State of Fashion closes successfully with 27.500 visitors
Exhibition closes with positive financial results
The first edition of the international fashion event State of Fashion closed its doors on Sunday July 22 at 18.00 hours. In 2018, curator José Teunissen started a quest for a sustainable future for the fashion industry, dubbed “searching for the new luxury.” 27.500 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad participated in this search, by visiting the exhibition or taking part in one of over 50 events. De Melkfabriek in Arnhem, State of Fashion’s HQ, may have closed its doors, but coming fall part of the exhibition “searching for the new luxury” will be on show in Wageningen and Eindhoven.
Professional and broad audience
Visitors particularly praised the richness of the exhibition, the combination of location and subject, and the accessibility of the story that the exhibition conveys. An international audience of experts visited the Fashion Colloquium, an international conference by the ArtEZ University of the Arts in collaboration with State of Fashion, which took place just before the opening of the exhibition. But other stakeholders also contributed to the search for new definitions of luxury: more than 30 organisations gathered their networks at State of Fashion for meetings and events.
State of Fashion also showed that the general public is eager to engage in the discussion about the future of fashion. In collaboration with key partners Museum Arnhem and Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem, but also with the Open Air Museum, Rozet and Film House Focus, a broad audience discovered that a sustainable future is closer than we tend to think.

State of Fashion, now and in the future
With State of Fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury, a unique platform has been created, with which Arnhem has once again profiled itself as an interantional fashion hub. Supported by the city’s Municipality, the province of Gelderland, the Ministry of Culture, Education and Science, and several public and private funds, and in tight cooperation with ArtEZ University of the Arts and Wageningen University & Research, State of Fashion showed that a new generation of designers is manifesting itself: visionary creators, who are led by experiment, inspired by the possibilities of materials and technologies, and who are focused outward, aimed at collaborating with a variety partners in his or her surroundings.
State of Fashion 2018 closed its first edition successfully. Thanks to careful budgeting and cautious management, State of Fashion also closes with positive financial results.
The (inter)national, regional and local network and trust that was built offers many prospects for the future. The coming months will mainly be about evaluating with partners, and looking forward. In September, part of the exhibition—the intermediary results of the research-by-design project The Future of Living Materials by the ArtEZ University of the Arts and Wageningen University & Research – will be shown in Wageningen (from September 4) and in Eindhoven for the Dutch Design Week (October 20-28).
